Boot into Single User mode

  1. Connect via console to the server
  2. Reboot the server
  3. When the Grub menu comes up press “e” on the OS you’re using
  4. Look near the bottom of the list of commands for lines similar to
    • linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic root=UUID=bc6f8146-1523-46a6-8b\ 6a-64b819ccf2b7 ro quiet splash 
    • initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-24-generic
  5. Add “single” to the line containing the UUID
    • linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic root=UUID=bc6f8146-1523-46a6-8b\ 6a-64b819ccf2b7 ro quiet splash single
      • Note: These are not persistent settings. After rebooting the system the “single” will not appear again
  6. Press “Ctrl+x” to start the server in single user mode

Change the Root Password

  1. passwd root
  2. Enter new password
  3. Test new password
