Hard Link: Creates another file with a link to the same underlying inode. The inode is only deleted when all links to the inode have been deleted.

Soft/Symbolic Link: Creates a link to another name in the file system. Like a shortcut in Windows.

Create a Hard Link

  1. Create the hard link from the source file to the new link file. Use the full path.
    • ln /path/to/source/file/ /path/to/hard/link

Create a Soft/Symbolic Link

  1. Create the soft link from the source file to the new link file. Use the full path.
    • ln -s /path/to/source/file/ /path/to/hard/link
